How To Pick The Perfect Canvas Size For Your Wall (Without Any Guesswork)

Canvo INDIA Size Guide

A simple, no-stress method to choose the right size for your canvas wall art — even if you've never done this before.

"Will it look too small?" "Will it look too big?" "What if it doesn't fit my sofa or wall?" — these are the three questions we hear the most before someone places an order. The good news: you don't need to be a designer to get this right. You just need a tape measure, a roll of masking tape, and five minutes. This guide walks you through everything, step by step.

Why Getting The Size Right Actually Matters

A beautiful artwork in the wrong size can still look "off" on a wall — too small and it looks lost or like an afterthought; too large and it can overwhelm the room. Size is not just a number on a page, it's what makes an artwork feel like it belongs in your space. The good news is that getting it right is a lot simpler than most people expect, and it has nothing to do with "design skills" — it's just a few measurements.

Use Painter's Tape Before Buying

If you're unsure, create an outline of the canvas on your wall using painter's tape. This simple trick helps you:

• Visualize the final size
• Check proportions with furniture
• Avoid buying artwork that's too small or too large

It's one of the easiest ways to make a confident decision.

Canvo Size Chart At A Glance

Here's what each of our four sizes generally works best for. Use this as a starting point, then confirm with the painter's tape trick above.

M

Small walls, study nooks, above a work desk, small entryway shelf, or as part of a gallery wall grouping.

L

Above a console table, side table, single armchair corner, or a compact bedroom wall.

XXL

Large living rooms, wide sofas (6+ ft), double-height walls, staircases, or as a bold standalone statement piece.

Want something between these, or a size we don't list? We create fully custom sizes on request — more on that at the end of this guide.

Two Simple Rules Interior Designers Actually Use

You don't need to memorise complicated formulas. These two rules cover almost every situation, and once you know them, choosing a size becomes intuitive.

Rule 1 — The 2/3 Width Rule (for art above furniture)

If you're hanging your artwork above a sofa, console table, bed, or sideboard, aim for the artwork's width to be roughly 60-75% of the furniture's width. So if your sofa is 6 feet (72 inches) wide, look for artwork around 43-54 inches wide — our XXL (48 in) or a 2-piece set would suit this perfectly.

ARTWORK (≈ 2/3 width) SOFA / FURNITURE (full width)

Rule 2 — The 57-Inch Eye-Level Rule (for height / hanging position)

The centre of your artwork should sit around 57-60 inches from the floor — this matches the average adult eye level and is the standard used in galleries worldwide. If hanging above furniture, leave a gap of 6-10 inches between the top of the furniture and the bottom of the frame, and let this gap guide the exact height rather than the 57-inch rule if the two don't perfectly line up.

📏 Quick tip if you don't have furniture below the art
On an empty wall (like a hallway or staircase landing), simply centre the artwork at 57 inches from the floor to the middle of the frame — no furniture calculation needed.

Size Guide By Room

A quick reference for the most common spaces in Indian homes and offices.

Living Room

Above the sofa

For a standard 3-seater (~72-84 in), our XL or XXL works best. For a smaller 2-seater, try our L size.

Bedroom

Above the headboard

XL suits a queen/king bed nicely. Keep 6-8 inches of gap above the headboard for the most balanced look.

Dining Area

Above a buffet or bare wall

L or XL works well above a sideboard. On a bare feature wall, XXL creates a strong focal point.

Entryway / Hallway

Above a console table

M or L is ideal for narrow consoles. A portrait piece like Peacock in Udaipur Palace suits this space beautifully.

Home Office / Study

Above a desk or shelf

M or L keeps focus without overwhelming a work area — motivational pieces like It All Starts With A Dream work great here.

Staircase / Double-Height Wall

Tall, empty walls

XXL, or a vertical arrangement of 2-3 pieces, fills the height without looking sparse.

One Large Piece Or A Multi-Panel Set — Which Should You Choose?

Both work beautifully — the right choice depends on your wall shape and how much "visual weight" you want.

🖼️ Choose a single large piece if...
Your wall is a fairly even rectangle, you want a clean, uncluttered look, or you're hanging above a sofa/bed where one strong focal point works best.
🖼️🖼️🖼️ Choose a 2 or 3-piece set if...
Your wall is unusually wide or narrow, you want a more dynamic, gallery-style look, or you're filling a long staircase or hallway wall. When hanging multiple panels, keep a consistent gap of 2-3 inches between each piece — this keeps them reading as one unified artwork rather than separate frames scattered on the wall.

Common Sizing Mistakes (And The Easy Fix)

Going too small "to be safe"
This is the #1 regret we hear about. A too-small piece looks like an afterthought and can make a wall feel unfinished.
Fix: When in doubt, size up one level, or use the painter's tape trick above before deciding.
Hanging it too high
Especially common in rooms with high ceilings — people hang art near the ceiling instead of at eye level.
Fix: Stick to the 57-60 inch center rule regardless of ceiling height.
Measuring the wall instead of the furniture
A large wall doesn't always mean you need the largest artwork — it should relate to the furniture beneath it, not the entire wall.
Fix: Measure your sofa, bed, or console width first, then apply the 2/3 rule.
Not accounting for the frame thickness
Our frames are gallery-wrapped and 1 inch thick, which adds a subtle 3D presence on the wall — this is a good thing, but factor it in if your wall space is very tight.
Fix: Leave at least half an inch of extra clearance on all sides when measuring tight spaces like alcoves.
SIZE FAQs — EVERYTHING YOU MIGHT BE WONDERING
I live in a small apartment. What size should I choose?
Small doesn't mean you should always go small. Use the painter's tape trick on your actual wall — you'll often be surprised that a medium or large piece looks better than a tiny one, since a well-sized piece makes a room feel more complete rather than more crowded. Our M and L sizes are specifically popular in compact apartments and studio flats.
My ceiling is low / my room feels small — does that change anything?
Not much. Keep the 57-inch center height rule regardless of ceiling height — resist the urge to hang lower "to fit" a small room, as this often makes the space feel more cramped, not less.
I'm renting and can't drill holes — how do I still test a size?
This trick needs no drilling at all — painter's tape comes off cleanly without damaging paint. This lets you finalise your size with total confidence before your artwork even arrives, so the only "commitment" on the actual wall is the final, correct hole.
What's a "standard" wall width in most Indian homes?
This varies a lot by home and city, so we'd always recommend measuring your specific wall rather than relying on an average. As a general reference, most bedroom and living room feature walls in Indian apartments range between 8-14 feet wide, which comfortably fits anywhere from our M to XXL sizes, or a multi-panel set.
Can I mix two different sizes on the same wall?
Yes, this is a popular gallery-wall approach. Just make sure to treat the whole grouping as a single unit — the combined width should follow the 2/3 rule relative to furniture, and the centre of the entire grouping (not each piece individually) should sit around 57-60 inches from the floor.
My wall isn't a perfect rectangle (slanted ceiling, alcove, etc.) — what do I do?
For irregular walls, measure the narrowest usable width and height so the piece fits comfortably with a little breathing room on all sides. If you're unsure, send us your wall measurements and a photo on WhatsApp and our team will suggest the best-fitting size, including a custom size if needed.
How much weight can my wall take? Is a large canvas heavy?
Our canvases use a lightweight wooden frame construction, so even our largest XXL size is easy for one person to hang using a single sturdy wall hook or nail rated for household use — no special mounting hardware or professional installation needed.
I want a size that isn't listed (M, L, XL, XXL) — is that possible?
Yes. We create fully custom sizes to match your exact wall measurements. Simply share your required width and height (and the artwork or photo you'd like) with our team on WhatsApp or email, and we'll confirm a custom quote for you.
Should I order a slightly bigger size "just in case"?
We'd recommend confirming your size with the painter's tape trick first rather than guessing bigger, since each canvas is custom made-to-order and sizes cannot be exchanged once produced. Taking 10 minutes to test on your actual wall removes the guesswork entirely.
Does the artwork's orientation (portrait vs landscape) affect what size I should choose?
Yes — always match your artwork's orientation to your wall space. A tall, narrow wall (like beside a doorway) suits a portrait piece such as Peacock in Udaipur Palace, while a wide wall above a sofa suits a landscape piece. If you love a piece that isn't available in the orientation you need, message us — many designs can be adapted.
